Banned by Dailykos : Let’s Not Stay in Touch or Be Heard

I used to read and post comments fairly often on dailykos.com, the fine democracy leaning web site run by veteran Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, best site for Ukraine war news.

But not lately. I got banned from commenting. Here’s the offending comment:

“A site admin has sent you a warning (Sun, February 19, 2023 at 5:08:19 AM PST)
A comment you made was hidden by the community for being outside of site rules. The text was:
‘I see your point. The US chose the wrong side because Iran kidnapped our embassy staff and held them for political ransom. Also something something Kuwait. An Iranian act of war which the US did not reciprocate.

Just like Israel’s air force in 1967 deliberately and intentionally and repeatedly strafing the USS Liberty in international waters. By A-4 Skyhawk attack jets supplied by the US to Israel.

Yet the USA let it slide, dead US sailors and all, and stripped the USAF and navy of much needed A-4 and Phantom jets to give to Israel in 1973 when Egypt threatened their lebensraum mini buffer empire in the Sinai.

And for gratitude we get Jonathan Pollard and Israeli support for treasonous insurrection against the US government. But then trump did move the embassy to holy Jerusalem so there is that. Israel is not our friend.’

I did not acknowledge receipt of this message and I won’t so I’ve been banned from commenting on DK for almost five months now and I feel fine.

I’m a conflict avoider and wrangling online only raises my BP so it’s generally a good thing when I don’t post comments.

Makes me calmer and more serene to keep myself to myself since no minds are changed in any case by online comments.

I’m more and more convinced that ‘joining the discussion’ online is usually only ego fluffing and self agrandizment in any case. Or pimping your website.

Much like ‘staying in touch’ with family and friend. I find my circle likes me better if I never annoy them with emails or texts or links which, in polite society, require a response.

Every link, tip or helpful hint is an implied rebuke of the recipient’s actions, thoughts or way of life. The way every gift is an obligation. True for the Japanese and true for us Murricans as well.

Lately I’ve been aiming for ego-free tranquil sedate self effacement and diffidence, and avoiding web wrangles and entanglement helps on that front.

So thanks, random anonymous dailykos.com moderator, you’re helping me toward serenity.

  1. Just so you know, I do not think a reply is required when I post on social media or email. The exception would be if I address you with a question or an invitation. Likewise, I would not ignore a post from a friend or relative that is clearly a cry for help even if I didn’t know how I could help. Some people just need someone to listen to them.

  2. I know if I need to cry for help you’d be there for me since you always have been. Some volks are on the needy side and some are more self possessed. Often it seems, in my experience, that YLYL. And that the zen masters who point out that needs cause suffering have a good point. I don’t have very many needs anymore since I quit drinking. And I’d like to pare the list down even more. Thanks for the comment.
